How to evaluate my chess progress?

I want to add a new twist to the usual ways we talk about tracking chess progress: money.
I've noticed some of us here don’t care much about ratings. We all have different reasons and goals when it comes to chess. And there’s this cool ongoing discussion about combining different indicators on Lichess to track progress. It’s pretty interesting stuff.
But here’s a thought I had yesterday: popular games often mirror what’s happening in society. So, what if the money you earn from tournaments or the number of students you coach could be indicators of your chess skills?

PS: books ordered yesterday: 9. pages read yesterday: 0.
Now, here’s a fun question for you: if one of those nine chess books could help you earn an extra $10,000 next year, would you read it cover to cover? No jokes, no trolling—I’m seriously curious.

Rating:

Online Ratings: Platforms like Chess.com, Lichess, Chess2Play and the Internet Chess Club provide ratings based on your performance against other players. Track your rating over time to see if it's increasing.
Elo/FIDE Rating: If you participate in over-the-board tournaments, your Elo or FIDE rating is a key indicator of your progress.
