How to build rating?

Hello, I am new to Lichess. I am a senior. Used to play in Soviet union when I was a youngster with high rating.
Now I have time to play. How do I get to professional rating level?
I am confused with lichess, us chess, fide, and online ratings. Want to advance and play in high rated tournaments.
Appreciate feedback and strategy.
I understand I need to win tournaments lol
Just need to know where to play.

Easy, play higher rated opponents. Sure, you'll lose many games but statistically you're likely to score higher than your expected performance. This is why people like Magnus Carlsen stagnate, there is no pool of stronger players from which they can gain rating.

Capablanca said you do more to get better when you lose than win. So he never loses a game almost 10 years and nowhere to go but down. So play a little over yourself. Other masters also say score maybe 40 percent. So I figure if you need 25 percent chance to win to stay interested this of course equals 200 points over you. To make an expected average result about 40 percent your opponent range would be about minus 100 or minus 50 to plus 200. Beyond 200 it is hard to get them to play you but if you can get games +500 yes very much do that and lose. We can not be afraid to lose. More important I do not actually worry about rating. I worry about chess moves. Hyperplay trolls will make a comedy of how the ratings come out anyway.

Since you are in the US. May be a good idea to email the USCF for tournament schedules. Or maybe follow American social media chess pages.
