How high can average players get without studying standard opening theory?

Is it possible to get to 1700 Glicko raitng on Lichess just by learning a few versatile concepts well and lots of practice or is study of opening theory almost a pre-requisite?

I got to 1900 Elo just knowing the first 3 moves in the Queen's gambit opening

You don't need more than very little opening knowledge to reach 1700.

Why would you be proud of ignorance?

You need to know some basic opening theory and have at least some idea of the openings you play. 1700 Lichess is anywhere between 1100-2200 so it is hit and miss.

Nonsense
This is my own experience. Knowing the first 2 to 3 moves in common openings and then some general opening principles should be enough. Playing some simple system would probably work as well.

A 1700 player just needs some opening rules like "Develop Your Pieces", "Don't Move a Piece Twice", "Don't Bring Your Queen Out Early", "Develop Towards the Center" etc. That's all you have to know. You don't need opening theory after 1. c4, 1. d4 or 1. e4. Use the opening explorer. There are a lot of good moves after these openings and you find them on the board just by following some opening rules.

In all honesty it depends on how strong 1700 Lichess really is. Is Lichess 1700 equal to 1100 ELO, 1600 ELO or 2200 ELO. Sure if 1700 Lichess equals 1100 ELO then sure you are correct. But If 1700 Lichess equals 1600 ELO, then no, you will be completely destroyed.

Depends on the format too.If you just play rapid or speed chess pick three openings and a general setup to play against moves like c5 or f5 etc.Just understand the concept of the opening. If you play long classical study some of the mainlines of your opening.I just became 1800 from 1700 and this is what I did. Also practice with the opening puzzles/trainer.
