With honour.
With technique & experience.
With technique and defense.
We already had the funny answer (@heallan) , so I will add the useful one ;D
You learn best defending, by being familiar with the attacks. Once you know what kind of attacks are deadly and why, you also know how to defend against them, by making it impossible for your opponent to make those critical moves. That can be achieved for example by locking the pawn structure or by guarding specific squares with your pieces that are critical for your opponents pieces to reach to continue the attack. You can also analyse a lot with stockfish, to learn the most effective way of defense, because defense is very complicated and the engine often comes up with amazing fortress ideas a human would have not thought of.
Also always think about counterattacks, then a defense might be not necessary. If you want to know more about attacking or defensive structures I can teach you.

You get 'em pal!
THIS IS the DIFFERENCE , Many players ONLY know attack & are simpleminded . THINKING about DEFENCE alone shows a significent step FORWARD , Justuce in Chess has to do with ATTACK & DEFENCE . There are two more Chess Books released recently on this subject that you can finf either at uscf sales or new in chess sales i believe . An older work was The Art Of Defense In Chess By Andy Soltis ... maybe start there & challenge the assumptions made but keep an Open Mind' . You are on the right track to learn how to Defend Attack Play Endings Middlegames etc etc @gilligan841 There should always be a Justification to Attack & if there isn't it's your job to win
Like a putz, actually (mainly I attack).
