How do you actually get better at chess?

All the way through the game, try to control:
At least two of the four central squares.
If the center is jammed, then the game is going to be played on the edge of the chessboard.
The mobility of the pieces is paramount. Reduce your opponents mobility and increase yours.
Control what enters or is looking into your half of the chessboard.
Before a fight there is always a push. there is always a reason to push. It could be to free the bishops. To force a piece to return into their territory. To attack two pieces at the same time.
Always question why a pawn or a piece moved.
Why did that piece leave it's post? (Future)
Why are there pieces left hanging? (Present)
Why are the other pieces left behind? (History)
Pawns are the reserve force. Without pawn you cannot get more pieces. Take care of them. They increase in value as they are freed from obstruction.

There are chess books with words of wisdom. They are useful to read.
