I never played poker or looked into the scene, but for some reason I remembered being told that in poker websites you are allowed you use bots - and it's the opposing players responsibility to exploit the play algorithms in order to profit.

nah, bots are banned. the sites that sell bots tell you the bots are allowed, they aren't exactly ethical sites. they probably do lots of other shady things with any data they collect about you.

i don't play poker, but there are always controversies happening in the poker world, gambling doesn't attract the most honest and ethical people around. I watch the occasional video about the latest controversy for entertainment, there has been many controversies about cheating in online poker. even the companies that own and run the online poker sites aren't the most ethical or honest, one of the larger ones owns chess.com

Chess is different.
Running a bot in the background while playing chess doesn't necessarily mean you are cheating. It could be totally unrelated to the game you are playing. You might watch and analyse a GM or WCh game and decide to play a quick game while waiting for the next move for example.

Most cheater are easy to detect by the big warning sign in their bio.

No but jokes aside, as far as I know it's a combination of many techniques, considering log-data, move times and average accuracy and winrate.

Unless it is completely blatant they don't. They don't even register all reports anymore because they don't care.

How do you think the "cheat detected" works?

That's a good question. Do you know how it works?
