Looking to my own games to try to improve...Is there a way to create a special folder to store interesting games for deeper study? Or a way to sort out games of a specific opening sequence?

Yes there is the bookmark option. It is a star sign that appears on the top left when you complete a game.

You can use the "studies" function to collect memorable games - you can also set them to "private".

Making games into studies and sorting them is a good idea. I don't see the star/bookmark option in the upper left corner. Is that an option that only appears if I give Lichess money?

No. It is available for all. However, I think it is only available to PC users and not mobile users.

The bookmark star is weirdly hard to find. You have to move your mouse into the rectangle in the upper left of your game window. When you do that the outline of a star appears in the upper right corner of the rectangle. If you click on it, the star fills out and the game will be in your bookmarks list. In your list of games you get to via your profile there is a place to click labeled "bookmarks."
