How do I make my own piece set?

I've settled on my final piece designs -- I managed to make the knights just hint at realism, and the first queen symbol (a harp or shield) is now an abstract geometric shape with more impact. The rooks represent castle walls with a gate in the centre, the bishops are drawing compasses, and the pawns have the Japanese character for "man" (which also suggests their movement.) Even though not everyone likes the bicoloured white pieces, it's a feature I love.
