How Do I Get My Puzzle Rating Higher?

I have a 2000 puzzle rating and I have had it up to 2500 on a different website a year ago. I would like to get a higher rating but I keep going up and down.

A while back I was pondering the same thing. Then it occured to me. There were 3 modes of chess puzzle solving.

  1. Teaching - when you get a book with chapters on each theme and examples to make you understand how it works.

  2. Training - Exercises which could be in a book or an app to get you practice the tactics.

  3. Testing - A timed session where you have a fixed time to post a score.

I call them the 3Ts - Teaching, Training, Testing.

It dawned on me that I was either reading books about tactics, like 300 Most Important Tactical Positions or testing myself by playing Puzzle Storm or something.

To improve however I need to find a way to train more and test myself less and read less theory since I already understood tactics.

I created an app, I call it Chess Master Cube, which trains you at chess tactics of different themes and phases of the game with increasing difficulty. It doesn't have a timer and you can just keep solving and solving. It is the chess puzzle training equivalent of a punching bag.

Let me know how you get on.

Instructions - If the cube loads with pieces in their starting position then play any random move for the side closest to you to set the cube into puzzle mode, for all six sides. If you are on mobile device use the point and click version (click from square and then to square to make a move) and on desktop/laptop you can use drag and drag version (click and drag pieces to destination square and drop to make a move). Good luck :)

If you want a higher puzzle rating narrow the selection of puzzles, i.e. only do certain types. For example, spend a month/week doing pin themed puzzles, then the next month/week skewers themed etc, make sure you double back each month/week to keep any previous learning fresh.

However given you game ratings you may want to just maintain your existing prowess (which I believe is sufficient) and concentrate of other things based on the defects in your games.
