There is a religious definition of jewish: converted to the religion or born by a jewish mother.
The Nazi government decided to declare anyone jewish who had one (!!!) jewish grandparent.
"Jewish" is a social construct too.
Without doubt there is a jewish history. This doesn't make anyone jewish who converts to whatever pov about the world. The only respectful way of handling this is accepting the declaration of the individual about it.

1) In Soviet Union people didnt have passports at home and couldnt freely go abroad to capitalists countries to play =to earn WAY much bigger cash than in S.U.
- thats why "best /only way- (to get out !)- was claim to be a jew" (especially after Helsinki Treaty 1975 more jews or"jews" were allowed to leave Soviet Union)

of course they neednt get ELO artificially boosted because being 10th-30th in Soviet Union was enough for being nr 1 in most rich countries on West in 70ties , 80 ties
