Fide rules on knocking pieces over or rules that should take effect

Does anyone know the rules of knocking pieces over accidentally or on purpose? in an otb game if you are low on time and your opponent knocks over pieces then hits your clock can you pause the clock until he sets the pieces up again? or do pause the clock and call over the arbiter and what ruling should he give? there should be a penalty of some sort otherwise angle shooters on purpose would do that to win on time or to change the position by putting pieces on different squares any help answering this question will be appreciated :D

There should be a penalty more severe than the rules of FIDE. I consider chess to be a sport. One aspect of a sport is a physical nature. How ridiculous would it be if Lebron James accidentally threw a basketball into the crowd and argued that it was an "accident" so perhaps he should be given a do-over. I say if you accidentally knock the pieces over because you're perhaps too fat to manipulate your body in a reasonable manner, or perhaps you're too fidgety to grab hold of only just one piece, or because perhaps you're just a spaz, then maybe you should just lose the game!

@nh78 thanks so what you are saying if he knocks pieces over and hits the clock i should hit the clock back and say set up the pieces in your own time?

Additionally, I guess you can also just pause the clock as indicated by 7.4.2 and 7.4.3 might come into play.

@hurryupdude ' if he knocks pieces over and hits the clock i should hit the clock back and say set up the pieces in your own time?'

No. First, no one of your opps will purposefully do that. Second, the rule is clear, if he has not correctly placed the piece but has pressed your clock, you STOP the clock and call the arbiter. You dont press the button and let his time run. Read the rules.

But in OTB PRACTICE, should this really ever happen (it has never happened to me) i suggest something much easier: You simply say "j'adoube" and you put the piece on the correct square. Should this happen a second time (i strongly strongly doubt), stop the clock and explain the subject to the referee. Say 'He just knocked off a piece a second time without correctly placing it again in his own time. I feel he is doing this on purpose. Please tell him to stop and observe our game for a while.' Not only the referee will, but also a LOT of other people will. This will teach your nasty opp the lesson he needs.

Hope this helped, but really, be aware, people in OTB are NOT like this. OTB chess is a much friendlier game than internet chess because people can and must look in your (and in their own) face ;-)

@nh78 umm in my chess club i am undefeated this year and players really want me to lose if you were there you would understand some of the players i am playing some are trying dirty tricks to make me lose a game i will pause the clock and call the arbiter over then if it happens again i am aware not many OTB players do this like this but some do so to say that players would not do that on purpose is wishful thinking....
