Forget about the lichess april fools joke for a second. Let's talk security in general.
Websites get hacked everyday. They have been since the beginning. There are a few things that come to mind.
-
for those of you that were thinking of closing your account or did close your account based on a disclosure. That probably won't protect you. Your information could already have been stolen before you closed your account, and closing your account 99.9% of the time doesn't delete your data. Assume if you want your data to be deleted you have to request it to be deleted in an email. I think deleting data is a recent phenomena due to a newish european law.

use a password manager like bitwarden. use 2fa if supported.
-
if you don't have to give personal information, don't give it. Even if they ask you security questions like your mothers maiden name. make it up and store it in bitwarden.
mainly I wanted to say closing your account doesn't protect you. I guarantee many websites you have accounts on have been hacked already, and many more will be hacked in the future. If you use a single password everywhere, or some "clever" password scheme that uses the name of the website, you're vulnerable and have been for years.
