I wonder if lichess someday would go as far as "ready player one"...the idea of meeting players and tournament with own avatar would be interesting...

As to starting one, I tried that also last year. Provided a venue, got some players, but in order to hold events that are rated, you need involvement by a USCF TD and of course before you say, well just become one of them; A: that takes an incredible commitment to travel, money and time, and B: Once you've done that you can no longer participate in the events you direct.
Both of those are actually not true. You don't have to travel--you could just start a local club. Also, why can't you participate in the events you direct? I recall a page on the USCF website (can't remember which, maybe someone could find it) that said that most of the clubs would not exist if the TDs couldn't play. The TD of my local club plays in the tournaments as well.
That said, being a TD still requires work and commitment.
By the way, the World Open (which I attended) was held in Philadelphia. Not sure how far that is from you, but there are several tournaments held there throughout the year.

I'm about 25 minutes west of Williamsport, so Philly is 3.5 hours if traffic is good. If not, add an hour or two. Lansdale which is where I did go, is just over 3 hours. That's down near Allentown.
As I mentioned, I did get a local club going. That was for about 7 months we met Saturdays. Most of the guys had no interest in the Uscf because they'd already had very bad experiences with that here in the past. So any hope of playing rated games was out. Most said outright if they had to do anything with the uscf they were out, period. I had already joined to play in lansdale, so I was already paid up for a year. I've since dropped my membership due to nowhere to play.
Fyi, NYC is about 4 hours. To the west there's nothing. Used to be a club in State College, but that dissolved years ago also. At least that was just an hour 1 way but the next closest place west is Pittsburgh, roughly 4 hours there also.
Someone told me that there's a club in Harrisburg, but again, >2hrs and I cant even find info on that.
The uscf site lists probably 30-40 clubs, 95% of which haven't met in over a decade. A few haven't met since the 90s.
