I personally don't feel I've run into many cheaters on either site, but the claim that there are 'more' here on lichess.com resulted in a couple of questions:
- Does it really bother you if someone cheats online? From my view, it is simply an opportunity to look for the best moves while playing a strong opponent/engine...in the end, yes I may lose ELO but the cheater will most likely never cross my path again and they are, of course, a cheater at the end of the day.
It does bother me, because the way these people operate (per the instructions of the program they mainly use) is "play unsound openings / random moves, then follow the CPU, which is calibrated to your elo". The upshot is that at my level you face absolute garbage that you can't learn anything from, then either win if you're playing the rare no-blunder, no-mistake game, or get instantly and mercilessly punished for mistakes or series of inaccuracies. You can analyze and learn, but you get fewer "teachable moments" per game, it's psychologically demoralizing, and all told - not optimal if you're trying to learn to face real players.
- Are there any metrics that can show more cheating on a given chess site?
YES there sure are. Even though I suck bad a chess still, I do not suck at computer programming and math / stat. There's a bunch of papers on this and I'm currently extending them, and writing software that will let hopefully let everyone utilize the math which will be turned into a website. Stay tuned....
(nothing will ever be able to show you if a particular game is honest, however)

Wow, this was truly an eye-opening thing to learn. I can't believe that there are people who would waste their time in such a way. I actually started a new account on chess.com which is substantially higher in ranking when compared to my original...the games at the higher rank seem much easier whereas it was almost impossible to gain ranking on the original.
Your response gives me some insight, so thank you so much!

Yes, my elo vs outcome curve is actually U-shaped on CC as are many others'.... It's not a waste, they're some linear combination of 1) "win at any costs by any means and you win", 2) trolls (the ones that verbally abuse you afterwards are the best), 3) "just using the bot to learn to play". They're.... not learning anything. Those two quotes are paraphrasing CC forums posts of actual people justifying themselves.

Last 1-2 months I played only in chess.com. Last 2-3 weeks have been full of bugs, huge lag issues and loads of cheaters (doesn’t help that c.c is good at giving rating refunds afterwards). Today I had it. Closed the account there. Jeeee the bugs, lag, and cheating has just exploded recently over there!!!!!

Expect ppl to exploit the Ukraine flag to cheat on Chess.com, expect that when your opponent's time is going down it's yours and refreshing does not help... Expect people to weaponize normal flags to trick mods on chess.com. Also expect that even the best connection won't connect...

I've said this until I'm blue in the face and few people care
