so I decided by curiosity and playing on my phone against 1800 lichess rapid players, would result massive loss streak.
To try chess.com on my phone casually playing matches 10+0/10+5 I was brutally shredding chess.com users until I hit 1450 rapid
now my lichess percentile is not even full 80% but on chess.com ridiculous 95.5% with careless play and 60% winrate. Lichess userbase obviously stronger
1800 chess.com vs 1800 lichess is not even comparable
it's like 1% top vs 20%top

Percentiles cannot be inflated. They represent a portion of the whole.
I suspect the reason that the disparity between chessdotcom and lichess is a result of two factors:
- Chessdotcom has more users, thus there exist more outliers from an absolute numbers perspective (relative to rating)
- The rating systems of the two sites are different

On a pay-to-play site maybe giving your subscribers higher ratings makes it more likely they'll stick around and keep paying ?

Yep I am in top 21% here with 1794 but in top 5.5% on chess.com with 1417
Obviously the ratings here are much higher but I am ranked in top 5000 here, not even in top 600,000 on the other site which makes no sense
chess.com has 10/0 in the same category as 60/0 which is bullsh*t and thats why I stopped playing there

Chess.com percentile is based on all members who have gained a rating. Lichess percentile is based on the people who have played a game in the last week.

that would make sense, active players in general is a much more competitive crowd since people that have only played a handful of games and never logged on would almost certainly be very weak. at least it boosts the ego of active players on chess.com lol

That is one way of looking at it. I started playing maybe in 2017 or maybe before that. At that time, my blitz rank was around 66k or something since not many people knew about lichess. During the pandemic, there was a sudden interest in lichess and my ranking dropped to 140k or something. I am yet to reach the 66k rank amongst active players. Sometimes I feel that if all the active players in chess.com move to lichess, my rank would easily drop to 400k(assuming chess.com has better top quality players)

Chess.com has a lot of lower rated players compared to lichess.org

The main difference I see is lichess has all the same features and is free. Also, the game review on lichess works better on my phone here.
Chesscom is bigger and has more active forums.
