I was wondering if anyone has found/created a good solution for analysing positions from chessable courses.
The course I'm doing seems really good, but there are frequently things I'd like to check quickly, so I can stay focused on what I'm supposed to be learning, e.g. checking move orders with the engine, or natural moves that are not covered. Chessable has an analysis button which loads up a new tab with some tiny non-resizeable board and an outrageously bad engine that takes about 2 minutes to even start to see what lichess sf can see in 2 seconds.
So far, every, single, time—frequently multiple times for the same page—I have to click the analysis button, then highlight the FEN, copy, then tab to lichess, then paste the fen, and frequently then flip the board. It's exhausting, time consuming, distracting, and leaves me with a tab jungle.
I don't understand how it can still be so bad after 2 successful years for them since I first checked it out.
I was wondering if anybody has a solution, e.g. if anyone has created a firefox extension to automate this, or if such a thing is possible. It seems like it should be possible and not too difficult.

In book mode, the FEN is visible directly under the board. I need to click exactly once there, press my copy shortcut, open lichess tab, open analysis board, paste into FEN and press enter. Flipping board? "F" in lichess.
If in review mode, a single click on the analysis button opens the analysis view, and your FEN is right there.
Yes, their engine implementation is bad and buggy, but getting to the FEN is 1-2 secs of work. Are you using a current browser, and what platform?

It's fiddly, and a lot more than a couple of seconds work and it's multiplied hundreds of times. As I explained, it's a massive distraction. I'm not in book mode. TBH, I have no idea what that even is yet. (The rest of the chessable website is also TERRIBLE, but I doubt that can be fixed with a browser extension so we'll leave that rant alone!) I'm learning the opening, and it's when I get to the end of the line and all the text appears for me to click, so I guess I'm talking about review mode, it still doesn't show me the FEN unless I click the button. And tbh, even what you describe, which is IMO attempting to unreasonably downplay how arduous it is, is an insane amount of work when you have to do it hundreds of times for no reason. One button that I could click without taking my hand off my mouse would surely be easier... :)
Here are some reasons why it is more than a couple of seconds work.
-
The distraction factor.
-
I don't sit with my hand on the 'flip board' button when I'm not even on lichess. My hand is on my mouse because that is what I'm using to move the pieces, and IMO anything at all that requires me to use another hand or move my hands somewhere else is already something that I would like to find a workaround for because it's unforgivably bad web design. It's arduous!
-
Even if I did, I still need copy and paste, and I need to click accurately or I have to click a bunch more.
-
I have to find the right part of lichess to paste it, and I might already have a lichess tab open so it could get confusing again. It's also another fiddly small box, which might already have a similar FEN in the box so again, fiddly and distracting.
-
Extra Tabs. Every time you do this it opens more tabs and if you don't close them it takes a couple more seconds to find your original tab and close all the junk.
6)Actually remembering what complicated thing you wanted to check when you get there and then when you get back to the study. It's like writing an essay when you can't type. You can do it, sure, but your quality will be needlessly much worse if you have to hunt for the keys all the time. Sometimes I am so distracted, I forget half of what I wanted to check before I even get there.
IMO It's a huge and pointless barrier to learning, and I figured it's exactly the sort of thing people might have worked around because it's so simple. :)
Yes, my browser is current. It's firefox, and I couldn't find an extension.
Thanks for your reply, but even if it were "1-2 seconds work", that's just to get to the FEN, and even if it were the whole process, I would still like to get rid of those 1-2 seconds because I find it hinders my learning!

I use chessvision.ai extension, do a quick scan and open in lichess (or chess.com). Takes seconds.

Thanks Doodle, this extension is a life saver!

Don't forget you can paste FEN into the search bar in Lichess, no need to open an analysis board. Just learnt that myself.
If the positions are related, it might be worthwhile to just have two tabs or windows open, one for chessable and one with lichess, and just move on both boards. But it needs click accuracy to enter the moves. ;-)
As lichess works fine here, and your problem is with chessable, I suggest to take the issue into their forum, as nobody at lichess can improve their stuff.

I love it and use it all the time. Works on Youtube, books, anytime there is a chess board on the screen, you can scan it.

Yeah, that's why I put it in 'general chess discussion'. TBH, it seems more likely, also, that someone here might have some extension or be able to provide some fix than chessable improves their site. It hasn't improved in like 2 years at least, and is missing some pretty basic features. I thought it might be quite easy to make something to automatically copy the FEN from the analysis tab when that button is pressed, and open it in a lichess board, but I guess it might depend how the chessable site is coded, whether you can edit what their buttons do. I don't know enough to know.
Thanks for the tip about the search. I still have to click to open the search, but it's keeping all the clicks at the top of the page so should be easier.
