I think I was told that 2 of the 960 are the standard position in chess, so its not true that every position is unique, for the usual definition of the word unique. Or is that wrong and its only 1 in 960 that is the standard position?
The standard position is listed only once in those 960, just like any other. People sometimes think that the mirrored standard position (i.e. with queen and king switched) is equivalent to it but this is not true because of the asymmetry of the castling rules.
