Checkmate Pattern exercise - Hook Mate #3

Good Morning. I have a question about the exercise mentioned in the title.
Before asking I want to apologize, since I am sure my way of communicating the circumstances (especially in regards to the coordinates) is lacking immensly. Not new to (also not good at^^) chess but certainly new to speaking about it.^^
Also I am not sure how to add the game board to a post so I just add the FEN for now.

The situation: 2b1Q3/1kp5/p1Nb4/3P4/1P5p/p6P/K3R1P1/5q2 w - - 0 1

You are supposed to do Qc8 and let the queen get captured by the King. Then you go Re8 and threaten the king again. Now in the exercise the king goes b7 and can be set check mate by Rb8.
My question: After playing Re8, couldn't the King go d7 and stop this from happening? I see no downside to it and it would avoid the check mate.

If Black goes Kd7,then you play Rd8 and it's checkmate.

If king goes to d7 then Rd8 would be checkmate

It is checkmate both ways.

If kd7 then Rd8 is mate.
If kb7 then Rb8 is mate.

p.s. you can turn on the engine and check the variations. It happens with me too, I think the puzzle is wrong or has multiple answers but turning on the engine solves it right away. (If you are new to Lichess you can press the space bar to turn on the engine and make the best move by computer)

I hope this helps.

Ohhh,,, Right, the pawn... Completely overlooked that one and saw e6 as a possible escape in that case...
Yep, that'll do it. Thank you.

EDIT: Extra thanks to LearningToMove, the tip about the engine seems helpful.
