Bumps in Lichess rating distribution

If you look at the rating distribution stats on lichess.org/stat/rating/distribution/blitz there are noticeable "bumps" on the multiples of 100. In fact, you can see them across pretty much all the time controls and variants.
Why do you think they occur? I initially thought that new players' ratings' starting at 1500 might've affected it, but that doesn't explain the bumps on 1600, 1700, 1800, etc.

conventional wisdom says it's players who stop playing after achieving a milestone, which is usually a round number.
though there is some person haunting this forums who claims it's a bug in the rating system.
you can decide which makes more sense.
