Invisible Pieces: Women in Chess

Bravo to lichess and the author for bringing attention to these important issues! As a fellow woman, thank you so so so much for compiling everything that I've been trying to say for the last who-knows-how-many years. You are spitting cold, hard facts, and if it makes all the misogynists out there angry, so be it.

One thing I would like to extend on the author's argument: women are perceived as more emotional when they play, and while this may be true to some extent, it's not because of an inherent female characteristic that makes us "more emotional than men"; it's caused by a environment and community that pressures us to constantly play up to a certain standard and "look pretty" while doing so. When each of our losses are scrutinized as evidence that we are "overrated" and/or "bad at chess," it's easy to feel extra pressure and succumb to emotions.

And that's not even starting when the problems of ahem the menstrual cycle, which I wish more activists would highlight. So to all the guys out there, don't even try to start anything, because you have NO idea what it's like.

@violetflower04
I'm pretty sure women are more empathetic/emotional due to the fact that they look after children, not societal norms.
Also, not all men (if any) get told that they are amazing or something every step of the way- it's upto the individual to hold out against the hate, and prove them wrong by excelling. You can't regulate every voice on the internet, and you shouldn't.
A lot of guys get the same hate online that girls get, and that's simply the nature of a massive online community- opinions, irrespective of weather they are nice or not, will exist.

@Menkhenamen Are you a woman ? It seems no... So you can't say. Your argument might make sense and I thought about it but only women can say if it's right.
So don't say things you don't know.

@DrNykterSteinway
My comment about women raising children? Bro go and find me a male with mammary glands, or any other organ needed to birth or rear a child.
Throughout history, men have been hunters, while women have raised children. You really can't deny that fact.

EDIT: this might be the only chance I'll get to say it so--

Facts don't care about your feelings.

@Menkhenamen So ridiculous off-topic answer... well...
I don't say you can't say if women are raising children, I say you can't say they are more emotional because of this, and not because of the social reasons that violetflower04 explained.

thats not a fact. Its nothing but a theory. In fact, its impossible to prove your theory. And this fact doesn't care about your feelings.

You need more empathy to raise a child, than hunt a deer or buffalo or something. It's practically an inherent feature of mothers- loving and caring for their children. How can you argue AGAINST the fact that women are more empathetic on average due to this fact?

@ritornell
What part of my statement was a theory?

How can you prove it ? I mean, how can you prove that it's not for sociological reasons ?
The fact that women raise children has also something sociological. Nothing forbid men to raise children too. That's just much less common. On average. Which doesn't PROVE it's inherent.

Bruh, how long ago do you think formula milk was created? You think baby's just like their mother's milk for no reason?
I'm reiterating this statement- women have been the primary caretakers for young offspring, from the conception of mankind.
A baby doesn't consume its mother's milk to oppress her from becoming some epic CEO or GM, it's cuz, for the majority of history, the baby died if it didn't.

Not to mention, most infants gravitate towards their mother more- have you ever seen a baby cry if the mum leaves the room?
It's because the child identifies the mother as their caregiver, their protection against the unknown.
