Did I mention that one could just not play openings. Do chess minigames from positions you already understand something about.. They are going to be casual of course. You can keep getting lost in full games too. But for the study, games from middle-games that are drawish might do as opening position surrogate. You can even use human opening theory, to identify such middle-game position where finding advantages is still up to your evolving understanding of chess (understanding of the position).
You can use the opening explorer in correspondence, to choose those type of positions. But I bet this is about winning for rated ou tournament games.. the fastest route. not the study where you can have some threads of positional clue to expand understanding..
I hope I have not already said that in here... Oh yes, the plan is to keep asking questions to the board in all your games mini or not.. and maybe work your way backward as you become able to see more clue on the board itelf, during a game.

The best openings are openings that follow the golden rules of chess. Use principles to play well. The rest comes with time. It is better to be good at endgames than openings. That way as the game progresses, you become stronger, not weaker.

For rapid improvement of beginners, there's no better opening than Ruy Lopez and Sicilian Defense.

I enjoy following the classical principles and construct massive pawn centers then invite my opponent to show me all they've got. Usually they end up suffocating due to lack if space. So that's a win for classical,i guess
