A Few Practical Chess Insights For Intermediate Players

Is nobody going to define what they think an intermediate player is?

It’s all relative to who’s asked. I view myself as a beginner at chess and masters as intermediates, while the grandmasters would be the advanced player group to me. Most would disagree with that categorization.

#32 very true, like young = younger than me and old = older than me...
Original poster probably meant intermediate player = player of his strength.

I meant by intermediate roughly 1800-2200 here on Lichess. Obviously it's a vague designation, but I would consider not only masters but master candidates as advanced. I've seen masters play 45 simultaneous games against club players, winning 42 and drawing 3. There is no useful purpose in calling a player at that level "intermediate". A master can beat a grandmaster from time to time. Players I designate as intermediate will never beat a master, at least in a longer game.

@jonesmh "Stronger player keeps tension longer." Overall, the player that can't stand the tension will try to resolve it too soon and makes a bad move. Applies to several other areas of life too...

@laatikko A strong player will resolve tension when it seems advantageous to do so; nothing to do with not being able to stand the tension.

@nayf Of course the strong player will resolve the tension with a correct move and at a correct time, but the weaker player can't stand the tension and will try to resolve it too quickly. I didn't figure I need to state the obvious.
