We already talk about Magnus Carlsen, in other cases we have the legend Bobby Fischer one of the best players and best rated in chess. So... who wins?
Fischer is Chess GOAT of Gen Boomers while Magnus is Chess GOAT of Millenials
Carlsen,Fisher died in 2008
Not sure, close race. I think RJF wins the crackpot challenge.
Magnus Carlsen. Fisher doesnt have engine access
As a rule, the top players alive at a given time possess the knowledge of their predecessors and are therefore simply ahead of them.
Of course, this says nothing about how much one of these top players dominated his era, but my guess is that a Carlsen of today would know quite well how to take a Fischer of that time.
There is an article in which Carlsen answers his view of this question:

2 different generation players. regardless of Carlsen's access to engines. He is a phenom and as such a powerful mind recognizing chess patterns. I think Carlsen would win.

In Fisher's time, Fisher will win against Magnus. In Magnus time, Magnus will win against Fisher.
Would Fischer forfeit before Carlsen got disqualified for wearing jeans? Stay tuned.
