Or just because "opposition is good" (as I did). In actual game Black player, rated above 2000, went for Ka5 and 5 moves later had a second chance and got it right, but didn't foresee the promotion with check, etc... so it is less than obvious.

So, like I did, the majority of people might accidentally give the right answer out of instinct, but they didn't really "solve" the puzzle in a deeper sense of the word "solving".
I would still think you don't need to see it to make the right move. If one option gives you a draw at best, the other gives you a draw at least, with maybe a win, you can make the right move.
Chess is also about decision making. If you always try to figure out everything to the end, you won't make better moves but get i to time trouble instead. :-)
If you really go for the pawn race is a decision that you can make later. There is no point in wasting time to calculate this at this point.
