Is this the reason for Bd3 in this position?

I think I finally got it, or have I? I have been wrestling with this Bd3 move for quite some time (5+ years). I may have made a breakthrough tonight. Let me know guys. The point is not to protect the c6 pawn but to prevent Be4? Is this why I should have played Be7?

8...Qc7 to protect the pawn is ok, but as you found out in this game, on d6 she is exposed to Ne4.

I see 8...Rb8 in the opening book is popular. The Two Knights is very tactical.

On 8...Be7 White can play 9.Bd3. Not sure what you meant by "prevent Be4".

Edit... Now I see what you mean, after 9.Bd3 comes Be4. Looking...

OK. 8...Qc7 9.Bd3 h610.Ne4 Nxe4 11.Bxe4 and Black has c6 covered and can pick one of several continuations.

8...Qd6 is bad as the queen is exposed to Ne4.
8...Be7, 8...Qc7, 8...h6, 8...Rb8, 8...cxb5 are all better than 8...Qd6. In some of these black gives up more material (a pawn or an exchange) to get an attack.

Isn't Be7 a crucial move because black is underdeveloped and white is already ready to castle and has some pressure?
So you want to play it as soon as possible

  1. ... Be7 in the game is possible because 9. Bxc6+ Nxc6 10. Qxc6+ Bd7 and black gets active, white is a pawn up but loses all pressure and has traded a strong bishop for black's knight on h5, which apparently is enough for Stockfish to evaluate it at 0.

  2. Be4 in the game doesn't seem like an actual threat. Stockfish changes evaluation from +1 to -2.2 on Be4

#5 In your line white is 2 pawns up, not 1. White's developed queen and bishop get kicked back. The bishop's pair is very powerful in an open position like this.
