I played 11...a4 as they call it a positional idea, is my understanding of the move is that it stops the free movement of the queenside pawns correct? Please help me out I want to improve.

It was correctly played as 11. a4 was logical.
Though I am not certain whose idea it was considering the fact that you did not have even a single bad move.

I don't really like it (but then, I didn't like 9...a5 much either). Seems a bit too "ambitious" for such a position.
