You mean your opening repertoire? Or a study here on Lichess?
I think OP is asking how they might come up with an original opening variation
It is possible, but remember that new openings are discovered, not created
Your best shot at finding something worthwhile is to study established theory and borrow concepts that you can use in a novel context
Chess has been out for many many many years
So uh good luck finding a new one never played in the past few centuries :)
@MagoDoXequeMate , it isn't about creating as much as discovering an opening, then owning it by expanding its theory. It's akin to a white paper, where a scientist finds an overlooked part of the world and, by researching it thoroughly and carefully applying the principles of science, they reveal its secrets.
That's my interpretation. For example I wrote a blog post about Adamisko's Zombie King gambit. He wasn't the first guy to play that line, but he was the one to discover the many traps coming out of the position, research the lines and publishing the theory. Historically, the names of openings come more from the people who have played them a lot or wrote about them, than the people who originally stumbled upon them. I wrote a post about the Englund gambit, the guy did not play it, but he organized a tournament from a starting position in that line and his name was associated with it.
Bottom line: it becomes yours when you are the one to focus the most on it and thus expand the world's knowledge about it.
A recent example that comes to mind:

I think the explanation of how Anna came up with her tongue-in-cheek system starts at around 1:20.
@Meerkatze Terrible example ^^
@HighlyCruciferous you might not like it, it may not be a good opening, but Anna did research this particular line, thus elevating the entire chess body of knowledge.
It's not really an opening. There aren't any actual ideas behind it
It's just a marketing gimmick
A highly successful one though, I can't deny that !
