It depends on your playing style if you wanted a calm game you could have castled king side and play a very calm game trying to win his backward d6 move and play a very positional game, or you could have played aggressively castling queen side and try to make a king side attack and pawn storm him in the king side, but your 12th move was pretty useless it doesn't make anything in the position, and it gives him the initiative
