This was a pretty poor quality game that I played recently as I overlooked simply trapping the opponent's bishop after his 9)Nbd7?? with f5 however I would like to know why fxe5 leads to such a tragic (-1.9) eval by the engine since It looks like I have at least some kind of compensation for the pawn for example the semi open f file and also why it was a lot better to retake with the pawn than with the knight as he did.

HEY, HEY HEY HEYHEY, if you go to 10. exf5?? and then click 10. f5 underneath, the pawn slides sideways!

10...dxe5 leaves you a pawn down, with a weak backward pawn on d3 and Bc1 hemmed in by your own pawn e3. You have no compensation for the pawn.
10...Nxe5? gives you some compensation as you kick his knight with tempo 11 d4 and you can follow up 11...Ng6 12 e4 seizing the center and opening the diagonal for Bc1.

Excuse my chess ignorance but how is the pawn on d3 backward after dxe5 if I can advance it freely in fact the engine in that line suggests advancing it immediately with d4?
And also are factors like me having 2 central pawns on the d/e file and a semiopen f in your opinion of no compensation at all for my pawn?
I've seen the wikipedia definition and it states " a backward pawn is a pawn that is behind all pawns of the same color on the adjacent files and cannot be safely advanced."

- No problem. The point is that after 10...Nxe5? you chase his knight from the center with 11 d4 winning a tempo and occupying the center and then you have compensation for the pawn you loast. After the better 10...dxe5 black controls the center, squares e5 and d4 leaving you with no compensation for the pawn.

Thanks for your feedback .
However I must point out I've consulted with a friend of mine who is a USCF national master and he pointed out that the pawn is indeed NOT backward :
