Yes! Whenever you stop relying on patterns, and are on your own, your creativity shines. I like to play 2 variants with my friends, one that I came up with, one that my friend did.

Doing any chess realted problem-solving will help your creativity. I remember trying to setup a double stalemate with all the pieces, but I never succeded ;(

And when it comes to getting better at tactics, there are 3 things to practice: calculation (puzzles), patter recognition (analyzing games), and creativity (different methods to 'prectice' creativity)
