It’s crunch time as we head into the final month of the 11th Correspondence League – with titles, promotions and relegations all set to be decided.
The final three rounds will all be played simultaneously from Saturday, and the beauty of the format means no promotions have yet been confirmed and the only relegations are down to withdrawals.
Here is how things stand in your group ahead of rounds seven, eight and nine. A reminder – if two players finish on the same score, the following tiebreaks will apply in this order:
#1: Points vs. tied participants
#2: Match wins
#3: Sonnerborn-Berger score against group (not calculated in these league tables).
I’ve tried to include the various tiebreaks in the tables.
Group C (tier 2)
- Springteufel P6 Pts 11
- FearlessButton P6 Pts 10
- sparrowhead P5 Pts 8
- JournoPete83 P5 Pts 6
- powerfrog P6 Pts 6
- Grand-Suomi P6 Pts 4 (more wins than CarlFromFinland)
- CarlFromFinland P6 Pts 4
- sidfanDX P5 Pts 2 (Sonnenborn-Berger calculation required with SEIGBERTOCHASHVILLI)
- SEIGBERTOCHASVILLI P5 Pts 2 (see above)
- StanPetrov P4 Pts 1
Springteufel has emerged from the pack as the perhaps slightly unexpected frontrunner of Group C.
A run of five straight wins - including benefitting from some of the several timeouts that have beset this group - was only ended with a battling 50+ move draw with StanPetrov in round six. It has been a fine effort so far considering Springteufel's rating is some way below their rivals - but they also face arguably the toughest possible run-in against the three opponents directly below them in the table.
New entrants FearlessButton and sparrowhead came into the group with high ratings and have certainly lived up to them so far, with both challenging for promotion to the top flight. JournoPete83 has consolidated reasonably well following last season's promotion and retains an outside chance of promotion going into the final month - the result of a tense encounter between sparrowhead and JournoPete83 currently being played out in round six could yet have a key bearing.
While JournoPete83 and powerfrog - who has stabilised steadily following last season's relegation - both perhaps need one more point to be sure of staying up, all the players in the bottom half still have work to do.
The trio of StanPetrov, SEIGBERTOCHASHVILLI and sidfanDX have been near the foot of the table for most of the season. But with those three playing each other in matches, both CarlFromFinland and Grand-Suomi have slipped into the dogfight at the foot of the table.
Big games that will see relegation rivals playing each other include SEIGBERTOCHASHVILLI v Grand-Suomi, StanPetrov v CarlFromFinland, CarlFromFinland v sidfanDX, Grand-Suomi v StanPetrov and CarlFromFinland v Grand-Suomi.
Best of luck to all competitors in your final three games!
