I played this game against this fine gentlemen where I won with ease. The sacrifice I made with the knight is considered a mistake by Lichess. Why is that and what would you play in this position?

The computer analysis itself gives the recommendation at move 8...a6.
It was your opponent's error 10.Bd2 that gave you the advantage, not your knight sacrifice. More accurate defence would have kept the position level.

Sir, the only good move for my opponent after my knight sacrifice on move 8 is Rg1, to which I respond with Ne5.
Would I not be better in this position?

It would be at move 10. when Rg1 is played, then 10... Ne5 11. Rxg4 Nxg4 which the computer thinks is +0.3 to White. You can try out these lines yourself in the analysis function.

The idea is that your sacrifice was fine, and clearly the pressure caused your opponent to lose, but with perfect play white can defend and come out equal.
The computers plan is to take space with pawns on the queen side, kicking out the white pieces, and developing your queen side pieces actively. In the long run this gives you an advantage because of whites weird pawns and cramped pieces.

Obviously if the engine considers it a mistake, there must be a better move. ;)

@BigBrain_BigPP
It's not mistake rather inaccuracy as per engine that's rated 3500.
That's insignificant for normal humans.
And it's recommended to not use engine for opening purposes.
Well, it's all up to you!
