Let's talk about exchange sacrifice

The exchange sacrifice is a powerful positional weapon, though difficult to master. I'm not used to making these sacrifices, but admire the beauty of them. Do you usually make exchange sacrifices? Here are two of my favorite examples from the great Garry Kasparov. All comments are welcome.

The one that sticks out for me is the one that Petrosian made against Reshevsky (I think it was).

The chessgames.com collection "Exchange Sacrifices" has many good examples, including MrPushwood's Reshevsky - Petrosian, Neuhausen am Rheinfal, 1953: https://www.chessgames.com/perl/chesscollection?cid=1028655

That's one of the greatest examples of exchange sacrifice!

It is true. I have reviewed said collection several times. Of course, there are other collections on the same topic.

The one and only Robert Fischer created this beauty on the board. Great exchange sacrifice!

That’s not a exchange sacrifice, it’s basically the opposite @Caballode3cabezas

Exchange sacrifices most often happen when there is a big difference in player rating. The idea usually is that it's a free piece. Everything is calculated. If it's recaptured often there is a mate in n moves. It's a lost game in any case.

I wouldn’t talk about exchange sac when it’s a 1 for 1 trade (like the Fischer game). Maybe people classify it as double exchange sac, I have no idea. For me it’s a normal trade. Imo if you apply it here the word sacrifice makes no sense whatsoever. If quality stays the same what exactly did you sacrifice?

Anyways it could also be strictly positional (not even close to mate) @pointlesswindows . For example to undermine certain squares and dominate with B later:

To enable tactics / expose king:
