how to improve

everyone how do i improve my rating:
here are some stats:
im 1800 hundred in bullets but somehow 1100 in blitz
1400ish in rapid
i used to go to coaching a while ago but stopped and now i just play casually but still want to improve. for people who got stuck around a similar rating and overcame a barrier-what made u improve. i still keep on making silly blunders-any tips on how to avoid that?
my goal is to gain 200 rating points in bullet and rapid (i honestly dont care about blitz)

In the 10+0 httpscolon//lichess.org/Uszlp5fV
game (2025.08.17), against Manish_Sinjali, things were going okay up to 1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 Bc5 3 Bc4 Nf6 4 d3 d6 5 Na4 Bd4 6 c3 Bb6 7 Nxb6 axb6 8 h3 O-O 9 Nf3 c6 10 O-O Re8 11 Re1 when you made the ~10-second decision to play 11...d5.
After 12 exd5 cxd5 13 Bb3 e4 14 dxe4 dxe4 15 Qxd8 Rxd8 16 Nd4 Nc6 17 Be3 h6 18 Nxc6 bxc6 19 Bxb6 Rd2 20 Bd4 Rxb2 21 Bxf6 gxf6 22 Rad1 f5 23 Rd8+ Kg7 24 Red1 Bb7 25 Rxa8 Bxa8 26 Rd7, 26...Rb1+ was another ~10-second decision.
After 27 Kh2, 27...Rc1 was an ~4-second decision.
In a 15+10 game, it would be reasonable to average somewhere around twenty seconds per move.
"... For many people with little time for chess the default option is internet blitz, in which the players have five minutes or less for the entire game. I cannot warn too strongly against taking this route if you want to improve, the problem being that playing too many games at a fast time limit will corrupt the decision making process. Instead of playing good moves, a player honed on blitz will look for moves he can make quickly and perhaps bring himself closer to a win on time. ...
... you need to keep to time limits in which the chess position is more relevant than the thinking time, and, ideally, much more relevant. I actually believe that only Grandmasters (2500+) should play five minute blitz, ... 1500 players should have at least 25 minutes thinking time for a game -- or a rough equivalent if they are using an incremental time limits. ..." - GM Nigel Davies (2010)

"1400ish in rapid" * Focus on 15+10 rapid.

"i still keep on making silly blunders" * Always blunder check before you move. Think about your move, consider 3 candidate moves, decide, then imagine your intended move played on the board. Then check it is no blunder: does not run into checkmate or does not lose any piece or pawn. Only then play it. A good tip is to enable move confirmation in your profile. Think about your move, play it, check it is no blunder, confirm.

"my goal is to gain 200 rating points in bullet and rapid" * Forget bullet, focus on 15+10 rapid. Key is to analyse your lost games so as to learn from your mistakes to avoid them in the future and exploit similar mistakes by your future opponents.

you even play hyperbullet... that is mostly a game of who mouse clicks quicker at that level. little to do with chess. stick to rapid, at least 10+5, when you get in trouble or dont know exactly what to do , in game, make a note, like move 13 what should i have done, etc then try after the game to see if you have a better move knowing what came afterwards , or resort to engine indication . remember that the engine also shows Threats in red if you switch ro threat mode to see what opponent can do. but mostly, ditch all fast formats for like a month, do your tactics, and play rapid with increment, and analyze the games, you will see some improvement.

Hey guys, I am wondering how I can improve in classical. Right now I am 1600 elo, I hear a lot of guys saying that at my level you should do more tactical puzzles, but my puzzle rating is 2000. is this really the area that I need to improve in, or is it something else? I do take up to 2 minutes though to figure out some of the puzzles....

  • Study endgames, especially rook endings.
