The problem is that smothered mates are ultimately...well, kinda boring. Once you get used to the trick, they all look the same (although the Morphy finale is admittedly a bit of a twist).

I do remember one that didn't work for me one time OTB. I had overlooked that if White has a knight on f3 along with a rook on f1 the thing doesn't work and you don't win the exchange. So all I ended up getting was a perpetual (cost me a couple hundred bucks too).

@MrPushwood I don’t think this checkmate is boring, besides it’s interesting to see how we arrived at it, from which opening, etc.

@EdgarSaint this isn't a proper one. normally, smothered mate start wih a queen sarcifise. but still, it is called a smothered mate
