It stinks that Carlsen won't defend, but he's not FIDE's slave nor anyone else's. I hope he just needs a break and will be back next cycle. Maybe he wants the challenge of clawing his way back to the title.

What Carlsen is doing is rather common in boxing, see Floyd Mayweather. He'll unretire if the right challenge comes along.
