Why is 39...a6 a mistake?
After 21. axb4, if you take the Queen then 22. Rxa8 wins the two Rooks:
21. axb4 axb5 22. Rxa8+ Ke7 23. Rxh8
So Black is actually down the exchange (Two Rooks and a Knight for a queen, -4 pawns).
