Perhaps this was a wakeup call to Carlsen. I think the only motivation he had to play this tournament is to actually engage against different styles and levels.
At Carlsen level he is so used to play against top 10 players that to an extend his style seems boxed.
Consider how many 2750s players lost to 2500s! Dominguez, Aronian, Firoujza etc. It was perhaps revealing to see they are not so strong when faced against different style from what they are so use to. This GMs 2750 train against computer only analyzing games of their competitors in the top 10. When they are face with strong GMs out of the 2700 clubs, they are very susceptible to lose.
Carlsen, showed his resilience beating all the 2500s easily and losing to a player who definitely has analyzed Carlsen to the nth.
Here, he had a chance to realize his flaws and improve upon.
