Would players at the World Cup ever consider?

"Cheating is unlikely going to happen, but the possibility to do so has definitely increased." Peter Doggers comment regarding the new playing hall. (Chess.com. lead reporter)

Myself, I can not imagine any of the 16 finalists "Cheating". Not the remotest possibility. To suggest otherwise I think is irresponsible journalism. But here we have a respected journalist who suggests , although unlikely, that these finalists may be tempted to do so because of "lax" playing conditions.

Honestly, I was very much taken aback. Am I naive?
There have been surprises at high levels of play before. Not with Super GMs of the like to make top-16 in the World Cup, that I'm aware of, but there are many cases of high-profile (relatively speaking) players being caught out-and-out cheating with engines during bathroom breaks.
I was a bit surprised by that in the chess.com report as well.

On the one hand, I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong in his pointing out that securing the play against cheating is more difficult in the new venue.

On the other hand, I don't know that was really the best way to go about making that observation. The way he worded it could be taken to mean that people are more likely to cheat now, which actually is probably not true with these players (and probably not what he meant).

Personally, I'd avoid mentioning cheating in articles on high-level events unless there was good reason to think it was occurring.

No need to stir up all this paranoia for no reason. Obviously the guy can report on whatever he wants, though.

Just wouldn't be my approach.

I agree. Why stir up paranoia unless there is reasonable concern? Doggers covers all the big events. May be he has suspicions, otherwise why even mention the topic?

Personally I think the motive is to sell copy. Throw in a sensational term, (cheating) though unlikely, could occur.

in Tournaments, you are penalized if charges of cheating are brought up without verifiable evidence. Mere speculation is highly frowned upon. By broaching the topic I don't know if Doggers was simply careless or is using his position to raise concerns.

Cheating has already taken place at the World Cup. Most of you are too ignorant to realize what has happened.
I have heard the speculation about one player in particular who was involved in an "incident". But it is all just that... speculation serves no purpose except to fuel mistrust until the final result is in.
