What is meant exactly by 'Action in the centre is the best remedy against a kingside attack'?

I am familiar with the concept of counterattack when defence itself is impossible in certain circumstances, but the above quote sounds a bit different. Does it simply mean that action in the centre disturbs the forces working toward attacking my kingside? Please enlighten me, wise ones.

Here's an example from my game. I had a very strong kingside attack, but my opponent counterattacked in the center. I neglected the counterattack, even winning the queen with my attack, but was forced into a draw. So the saying held true for my game!
