On the face of it, saying " consider the possibilities that could have come out of the limitless human creativity of an entire online chess community had they been asked." Sounds like it means something, design is a thing with which most people are not conversant with and in all likely hood any few offerings which might arise out of such a general quest would for the most part be of no value.
There is no denying that there might be out there amongst our players, an 'unsung' hero, making such a sweeping statement has little if any value, (as I said above) and of course there is nothing stopping anyone sending in their artistic efforts.

That does look like the profile or silhouette of a knight chess piece with some 'art' content
(spiky background colour mane and 'free' table') it doesn't have the 'oomph' factor required of a logo. (IMHO)
