A legend of chess refereeing

A pleasant interview with a legend of chess refereeing, Geurt Gijssen, conducted by IM Sagar Shah. Geurt was the referee in many important tournaments and duels such as Kasparov vs. Karpov (1987 and 1990) and Kramnik vs. Topalov (2006). I really liked his advice to the new referees at the end of the interview: modesty and perfect knowledge of the rules.

What a track record and what good advice! I often referee various school tournaments, so this interview motivates me a lot.

Just last weekend I had to referee a tournament and these recommendations came in handy, as I tried not to be the protagonist in the competition. Geurt Gijssen is one of the referees I admire.
