Gifs

It is my opinion that "Gifs" add nothing to any discussion in the forums. Topics invite differing opinions which may lead to a better understanding, or pointing out a new perspective, or offering the opportunity of healthy debate.
Gifs on the other hand (or Pics in general) simply become a "sandbox playground" completely irrelevant to the topic. Once Gifs become "accepted" the practice only escalates till a discussion is nothing but the opportunity to post pics/gifs.
Agree? Let Lichess know.

I do not oppose the posting of pics/gifs ... if the intended thread is made as such. Humor by this means is often very entertaining. My gripe, is in topics where discussion is taking place, posts start to "hijack" the discussion simply by posting irrelevant gifs.

I'm going to venture a guess here and assume that you're talking about me lol.

I will curb my gif posting in the future unless it directly applies and contributes to the thread. My main motivation for posting them is to give some much needed flavor to the banal walls of text that we often encounter in the forums.

No untinkable3. I am talking about the extravagant posting of Gifs in general. It really is not an issue (yet). At CC it became so prevalent, alot of members had a Gif as their moniker. (Eventually banned). Every thread became a playground to post gifs. Discussions became secondary to pics. I have recently seen CC has finally banned a couple of members that had 100's of accounts abusing the forums. It's not anything personal. Just my opinion. These abusive "citizens" will migrate to other chess sites. Lichess moderation is senseable, the bottom line is not $.

Regardless, I agree with all your points and statements; if we are not careful, the forums could eventually devolve into a playground of idiocy and memes, annihilating any semblance of intelligent discussion.

I will treat the Off-Topic Discussion forum as open season for gif posting however :)

Dude what is it with people being absolute control freaks on an internet forum? It's not like this is a court discussion. There are no proper procedures of decorum. If you are getting offended by the posting habits of people on this forum who are not directly harassing you, you need to step back and contemplate what has brought you to this place in life where the etiquette of an internet board is so negatively affecting your life... maybe try getting off the forum once in a while, going outside, reading a book...

@no_seigen

I've noticed this as well. I come from certain websites (I won't name them) where the comment or forum section is un-regulated and anything goes. As a result, I have thick skin and don't take offense to anything people say on the internet.

On these forums it is the opposite. It is filled with snow-flake liberals who are easily offended, devoid of humor and enjoy attempts to manipulate and/or control the behavior and thought processes of others. I've never seen anything like it. In addition, they take themselves way too seriously and are quick to label anyone they disagree with as a troll.

In all of my posts (277 currently), I have probably slung 1 or 2 direct insults at others; apart from that, I have done nothing sinister - but many here would pay real money to watch me die a horrific death lol

These forums are one of a kind; unique in the sense that with everyone's obsession with political correctness and control freak tendencies on display, they make it more toxic than legitimate trolls ever could.

The "evaluation" is incorrect. A "time and place" for everything. Members seeking legitimate discussion should not be subjected to the "whims" of those whose sole intent is negative attention. By example, I expect someone to post a gif here soon, Laurel and Hardy in a slap stick routine.
Let there be a separate forum for fun and games. I'll be the 1st to join in.
However, by having a "anything goes" policy in any forum, in fear of violating a persons right to post as they choose, will eventually lead to destruction. Bank on it.
It has nothing to do with "control freak tendencies on display".
What does this phrase conjure up ? Images of suppression? That somehow calling for common sense is a bad thing?

The "Seperate forum for fun and games" is the off-topic discussion. @mdinnerspace

This needs to be moved to "Off Topic" by a moderator. My apologies for not starting it there.
