chess ratihgs

i have played on a lot of chess sites and never had a rating this low . any one else think the ratings on this site are low ?
ratings are low because there arent a lot of players on this site and also because a lot of ppl cheat and get their accounts closed, effectively taking points out of the system.
But how do we know that people don't cheat on those websites???
This website does not use the same rating system as other websites do.

Honestly I still do not understand its logic. Yesterday I beat someone 400 points higher than me and I got 30 points. Today I was beaten by someone 150 points lower than me and he scored 55 points!

I gave up some time ago trying to search for an explanation. I play this website because I like it, but I do not care about rating here at all.

Kind regards,
Enric
lichess uses ELO formulas and K factor, like most other websites. Ask wikipedia what it means.
I know nothing about chess, but for what I've read about ELO rating, it’s based on the 'reputation' of the players; all we begin with a 1200 ELO which is an 'average' rating. At this point, if you lose, this goes down; if you win, goes up.
Maybe the ratings are low because are very good players here. Consider that are players of all over the world. If you win a bunch of games your ELO goes up, if you lose a bunch of games your ELO goes down. Is that simple.
Now think about the 'reputation' thing. If your reputation is high, is expected more of you; so if you lose with a 'rookie' then you lose the points that you deserve to lose, because the different expectations between you and your opponent. Higher your rating, higher your reputation and higher the expectative about you. So the 'points' are more precious; that’s why there’s less when you win, even against a better player. Is about reputation, not points or credits or some like that.
For what I know the ELO is a relative rating, relative to the players there are being rated by playing each other. That's why I say that are good players here.
I’d like to know the opinion of an administrator by the way.
Your opinion makes sense for how the rating in this website works. And that's why I said that Lichess is not using the same rating systems as other websites, because Elo rating system depends of the difference of players ratings, and not of what is expected from you.
I mean I respect how it works here, and I do not dislike it. Just I could not understand things like these:

Thanks Aemaeth for making it clear. That also explains why the ratings are lower.
The ratings on this site are lower than chess.com. I once challenged a >2000 player on chess.com to play here and see if he could get the same rating. He couldn't make it past 1650. There are only like 15 people rated over 2000 on this site.

I don't think it's because there are cheaters here taking points out of the system, because there are just as many cheaters on other sites. I think it's more there are less people here to begin with and thus less new people joining and adding points to the pool. At a place like chess.com which is the most popular chess site online, tons and tons of people are joining, many of them complete beginners or very casual players who are going to play a few games and never use their account again. All these people get 1200 ratings and when they lose those points go into the pool. I'd say it's a less casual pool of players here.

I prefer a site to have deflated ratings rather than inflated ones. This way peoples' egos don't get out of control, at least not as much.
it looks like a new player on this site gets a lot of polnts with a win over a high rated player or the loss of a lot of points to a lower rated player. after they have played few games , lm not sure how many . they dont gain or lose as many points .
