It was weird why nxe5 was a good idea because then your queen would be taken. Am I the only one that thinks that is pretty strange as well?

Not strange. if you look at it after the bishop takes the queen you fork the king and queen and end up a piece ahead

If black takes your queen, then you play Nd7 to fork the king and queen, so in the end you're up a knight.
