Chess.com is so bad. On lichess everything works smoothly and on chess.com I feel like my pieces and all other buttons are stuck in mud. Everything lags. On top of that their cheating detection is sh*t, I know someone who got banned from chess.com although he definitely didn't cheat. They forgot to focus on the basics. They're all about flashy things like top players, top events and as many users as possible. They have 27.094.127 accounts. If more than 20% of these are run by different human beings, I would be shocked. You don't even have to verify your account via an E-Mail-Address before you can start playing there which is insane. Chess24 at least has the best tools for learning, the video series and e-books are amazing and their broadcasts and commentary for tournaments are excellent. Lichess is the site with the best playing experience. The tournament system and the variants are also things only lichess gets right (although I want bughouse here, GODDAMMIT).
Lichess is clear, transparent, fast, APIs let you customize your experience. For example I think that the tourney page is overcrowded and not fit for user created tourneys, but using the API I could create a page, which lets me view only the variant of my choice:

One thing I miss from chess.com is candlestick charts witnessed in tactics trainer. There is a newly created API now for rating, but it only makes available one rating point / day / perf, so you can't even create a candlestick chart on your own. You could in theory use the game download API for that, but it is way too slow for this purpose.

You don't have to choose only one, why not use both? I prefer chess.com for long time controls and blitz (also puzzle rush that is exclusive), lichess for bullet and study.
Chess.com was made to extract money from users. Lichess.org was made so people can play/learn chess. Lichess even plays and looks better, as well as having superior cheat detection. I tried giving chess.com a chance a few weeks ago and I wont be going back.

lichess.org is modest - you practically have to dig to find out how to support this site. Chess.com is shameless money grubbing.
