Is chess a lucrative career?

You can make $15 per hour working part time for someone else. You have to have marketing skills to make more than that.

To get paid to go to the biggest tournaments, you need to be at least 2600. 2000 is the minimum before anyone will trust anything you say, but you still need people skills. 2400 might get you clients even without the best people skills.

No one will keep paying you or refer you to others unless they see their rating go up. But they might not want to put in all the work.

I've been a math tutor. It is not glorious work. They don't know where their gaps are, they are way behind, and they want you to get them an A on their homework or exam, and they don't want to put in the time.

Chess is no different than physical fitness or learning math. It is a lifestyle and takes work. No master can add 400 points to your rating just with wise words. That fact is tough to sell to people. They have to enjoy your personality to keep paying.

Some sales agents try to sell packages of sessions, saying that financial commitment is needed for success. Well, personal fitness trainers do.

You could make stable financial earnings out of those which can be useful for extensive expenses such as degree, passion, goal, etc. (Might as well as include taxes and more expenses with basic needs.)
In all honesty you could make a career out of Chess. You don’t really have to make Chess primarily your career. You could be a programmer while becoming a Fide Master. It really boils down with your time expenses and objectives.
I’m going to open up my youtube channel sooner enough. Hopefully somewhere in November. I just really have to finish my studies and priorities before doing so.

Create a face that looks better than yours, and then control it with your own face via software. Same with voice. Then you can be a pretty woman and make lots of money with your low rating. It is no one's business what you really look like.

Get good enough at graphics and you can make money in other fields that are even more lucrative.

No. Chess is not lucrative.

You should view chess as a creative art and compare it to similar professions. Those orchestra musicians have reached a high level of competence (more than you in chess) but struggle financially. Same with all the aspiring actors and musicians who haven't made it yet.
The big difference with the past is that you don't have to be strong to make money from chess anymore. If you're popular, streaming can pay better than the hand to mouth existence of chasing prizes in open tournaments.

Is chess a lucrative career ? NO

If you are male, you are not going to make a good living, by just playing chess. A grandmaster, studying 7 hours a day, travelling around the world, staying in cheap hotels can make a subsistence living. However, chess can be a route to a lucrative career and a better life, in other ways. The fact that you are asking the question, suggests that you will not be dedicated enough. You need to find something that you are prepared to dedicate yourself to, without any doubts about wanting to do it full time, regardless of the rewards.

Chess is not a spectator sport. A regular person can't watch chess on TV and immediately understand what is happening, unlike football or tennis (or even poker). Because of that, there is very little TV / streaming money. Unless you're in the top 100 players, you won't be able to make money from just playing chess. You'll have to give lessons (probably the biggest source of income for most titled players).
