Someone is going to make us pay for air we breathe soon enough, I'm even taking bets on when will it happen. By the way, their servers have been crashing since late December (at least in my experience) and what did they do? Added new bot to promote some dumb movie. As someone once said - lichess is focused on making best site to play (and get better at) chess, chess.c*m is focused on making site that makes the most money.

Oh, btw - what are "peak times"? Did person making that tweet ever heard of this weird thing called "timezones"? It's always peak time somewhere in the world.

They are successful in doing that. That's how our economies work. I'm not an average customer so I don't understand average customers who follow influencers and so on but chess dot com knows how to make money with these customers. So I don't blame them. Everbody can choose their products which they consume.

not it isn't. peak time for a server is when it has most users. it has nothing to do with timezones. lichess has peak times as well.

I don't see what's wrong with that, and sincerly I don't understand what is the need to underline it all the time and everywhere.
A chess server is not the National Health Service, that is supposed to guarantee a basic need for free to everyone. It doesn't seem to me that playing chess online is a fundamental human right... The doctor doesn't order you to subscrive to that server ( paying the equivalent of some cups of coffee a month ). And if, as is true, there are many who are users of both Lichess and chesscm, clearly they find that both servers do something good for chess. Each in its own way.

The issue is that if chess . com managed to buy up and shut down every other chess server they would use that monopoly to make you pay to even play games. You could easily see them letting you play only one game a day unless you paid for the premium service.
Lichess is more important than ever.

Oxygen is produced via natural process. Some needs to pay for chess servers somehow. whether it is donations, adds on periodic fees. servers do cost actual money. And chess com is unlikely to ask money for playing as loads opponents is interest of paying customer who actually pay for the lack of advertisement and chess related educational content

@Meriten - I absolutely understand that and agree, I'm just saying it's not for me. Especially since I've got everything I need and want here or on chesstempo - for free. But when I get my paycheck, I will surely contribute to Lichess for great service they provide!
@a_Tauri - here that's couple cups of coffee alright, but in some countries with worse economy it's so much more and unless you go straight to diamond member (100$ i think?) there isn't that much to gain from it. Plus you are wrong, for me playing chess is like a fundamental human right cause it's one of few things that help me keep my mind from focusing on my depression.
@Hedgehog1963 - This guy gets it!
@petri999 - Sure, that's how businesses work, but if I'm going to give my money to someone while playing chess, it's definitely gonna be this site. Here I learned more about openings in matter of days than I did on the other site over the course of weeks.

I knew that they had bought the whole Play Magnus/Chess24/Chessable shebang. Today I found out they have obtained New In Chess also. Apparently it was part of the Play Magnus group portfolio. Also acquired: Ginger GM, iChess, Aimchess and Everyman Chess.
