Aha, I see some other designer beat me to it. Nice, an improved logo really was needed (old one bothered me everytime I visited).
However, it would have been interesting if the logo was something altogether different. A knight is not very fresh or original.
Anyway, given that it is a knight, I have to say it is definitely an improvement.
- Some have commented on the shift in orientation, but I feel it's a very good choice to have the horse look to the right. It feels more natural, and it goes with the reading direction;
- Very good decision to get rid of the strong horizontal base that the original logo had. That was terrible, especially the way it was boxed in so close into the game finder frame. It is much more light this way. Defies gravity a little bit;
- Stroke modulation is well handled, I think; width I guess is fine for the large display
- Good idea to get rid of eye and mouth.
It is still far from perfect though:
- Especially the ear-section bothers me.
- Maybe also something wrong with the rounded corners, it looks a bit cheap.
- The direction in which the tail meets the chin, and the space between. Something feels off. Also, it looks very, euhm rounded. Like a balloon, blown up.
- The use of one elegant line reminds of most beauty salon designs... (though the execution is better)
- Also, and this is not the designers fault, displaying the logo so large and transparent over the game finder... I mean, any logo will look bad that way...
(- without wanting to be mean: I have nothing good to say about the chess piece designs. These designs are below standard.)
Anyway, it is easy to criticize. Congrats to the designer and to Lichess. Overall, it is a very elegant design and I am much more happy to see this one than the previous one.
Time now to also update the word logo that is in the upper lef corner!
