Magnus the boomer. His reign is over

five-time World Chess Champion (2013–2023) and current four-time World Rapid Chess Champion and six-time World Blitz Chess Champion. Carlsen has held the No. 1 position in the FIDE world chess rankings since 1 July 2011 and trails only Garry Kasparov in time spent as the highest-rated player in the world. His peak rating of 2882 is the highest in history. He also holds the record for the longest unbeaten streak at the elite level in classical chess. -wiki

it was dumb to give up the world title

he was getting bored. the championship was very high risk low reward for him.
that's not the case. He would be extremely hard to beat and he could make a new historical record beating Emmanuel Lasker (6 times undisputed) with relative ease winning 2 more times

sad days because we will never know
to me, he will be not known for his wins but how he handled one particular loss.

could be. in the end he did not seem to think that a reward worth the stress and other negative factors. he has decided to work on becoming the first to 2900 which he must feel is a more productive use of his time. in the end he's human, and is allowed to make whatever decision he wants, and seeing how its not harming anyone, i think its really rude to be upset at his choice. if you want chess history, think of how amazing it would be for someone to get to 2900.
Carlsen is the GOAT and he's still the best player in the world by far. Ratings don't lie.
